Sleep out. . . so others can sleep in
Posted: October 23, 2007 | 1:14 PM | Emily Ralph

Last night the Morning Show crew headed out to the Souderton Shopping Center parking lot to "sleep out" to raise awareness for homelessness.  The night started out with a party-like atmosphere, with the guys building a fire pit (what’s with boys and fire?), scavenging for food (thank goodness for Wawa, right?), and a live broadcast with Timmy D on the evening show.  Dave’s buddies were Don Brunk from our prayer team, Billy Dunn, former morning show color commentary, and Mark Malizzi from Thunder Outreach, an organization that throws block parties and food drives in Jesus’ name.  Hearing my desperate plea for female companionship, my friend Holly who works at Indian Valley Housing Corporation and volunteers at the station, came out to give me support.

Here’s our cardboard village (a few people slept in their cars as well); Dave and Don checking in with Timmy D; Don’s son Isaac trying out the coziest of accommodations; Don showing us how comfortable he would be; All guys need for a sleep out—newspaper, tape (for taping me in my box), and Oreos; Keeping warm and entertained by the fire.

In the morning, everyone was a little more subdued as they dealt with stiff backs, hungry stomachs, and very little sleep (Rte 113 is NOISY!).  Dave helped Don get the fire going again; Billy Dunn snuggling up in his blanky for comfort; Don and our new friend Ryan enjoying the fire as the sun rises;
Beautiful sunrise over the conference center; My home for the night—warm and cozy!

Thanks so much to Cheryl Swartley from Bridge of Hope and Jennifer Ashley from Indian Valley Housing Corporation for coming out to answer our questions about homelessness.  If you’d like to sleep out so that others can sleep in, check out their websites -- Indian Valley Housing Corporation and Bridge of Hope BuxMont.

"Overdressed"

This is Virginia (Ginny) Mei all dressed up for her aunt-to-be's bridal shower. She hates being overdressed, she's much more of a casual-diaper-only kind of girl.

A friend of mine got me into the whole X-Men movie thing by drawing a character for me (MimeGirl). I created a back-story for her and wrote it all out so that she (Jenny Grey - mute, mime and mutant) fit into the world of the first two movies. Also, when I was going to school out in Southern California, it was my goal before I left to attend a midnight premiere of one of the popular fan-based movies where all the crazy fans dress up in character.

It happened that X-Men 3 was coming out just 2 weeks before I was to graduate and move back home. Though I could get no friends to join me, I was resolute to go and ordered tickets for the opening premiere at Mann's Chinese Theatre in downtown Hollywood. Because it starts at midnight, the dating and time on the ticket was confusing to me.

I could not tell if it meant midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morn or Thursday night/Friday morn. So I called the theatre and talked to someone and hung up with the understanding that I was to go down Wednesday night to see the movie.

So, all excited to try something new like this, I dressed up in my Jenny Grey outfit and drove down to Hollywood. I headed to the ticket booth to pick up the tickets I'd ordered and began to get a strange feeling. It's not like the streets were empty, but there were definitely not enough people out and about for an opening premiere. I HAD THE WRONG NIGHT! So there I was, dressed up in my X- Men character with my "X" belt on looking like a freak in downtown Hollywood. *sigh* Totally overdressed.

On August 4, 2007, we did an "AmazinGRace" for our youth group. Part of the trek they had to go to Cabela's and find me (one of their leaders) to get their next clue. I wanted to dress the part of a "typical hunter hick" so that I'd "blend in" with the crowd. Well, I overdressed the part a bit. The "typical hunters" looked at me like I was ... uh, well uh ... different.

The "normal" people that were at Cabela's did double takes, ran away with scared looks (usually kids), just plain ol' stared, etc. OK, so I overdressed the part a bit. The wild part was that I almost went up to someone and said, "Hey, you're in a costume too!" ... but the person (a woman, no less) was NOT disguised ... she really looked ... uh, different.

Mother-Load contest
Posted: May 30, 2007 | 2:59 PM | Emily Ralph

Recently, The Word FM sent a team of workers (Dave Baker, Emily Ralph, Kristine McClain & Claire Landes -- our administrative assistant) up to Wind Gap, PA to help out Annie, the winner of the Mother-Load contest.  Nominated by her daughter Corinna, Annie works looooooong hours and is very dedicated to the people she serves at her job, so we felt she was very deserving of a "break" from some of the chores around her house.  We spent an afternoon getting her deck ready for the summer, as well as doing windows!

Yes, we have no bananas!
Posted: July 9, 2007 | 4:01 PM | Emily Ralph

Who says Emily has a stomach the size of a thumb (apparently, Dave did!).  Boy, did she prove him wrong (even when he was allowed to substitute a jar of banana baby food for an actual banana!  Final score?  Emily: 9, Dave: 5
